SUMMARY:Deans' Gathering
DESCRIPTION:As you are aware\, the HELM annual programmes are in full swing with exciting workshops\, courses and events currently on offer. \nAs part of our mandate to capacitate and develop the sector\, we are planning an in-person consultative and interactive workshop for Deans. \nBearing this in mind\, we would like to invite you to join us at an in-person Deans workshop in Cape Town. It starts with an informal dinner on Thursday\, 3 November 2022 and then continues with a full day session on Friday\, 4 November 2022. Your input on a programme that would be dedicated to the critical work Deans do\, and how to prepare for and support them in their roles\, is critical. “Nothing for us\, without us” is the motto which underpins this invitation to you. \nThere is no registration fee and HELM will provide one night’s accommodation for the out of town Deans at the workshop venue (to be advised shortly)\, and cover the conferencing costs of the event for all participants\, so there is no registration fee.  However\, your university will be required to cover the costs of your own travel and airport transfers to Cape Town. \nThe main topics to be discussed at the Deans workshop will be as follows: \n1.     Welcome and introductions – Oliver Seale \n2.     Objectives and overview – Denise Zinn \n3.     Deanship in complexity and change – Oliver Seale \n4.     Leadership and management development for Deans – Denise Zinn \n5.     Summary and Plan of Action – Oliver Seale \nWe will provide you with more information on the programme and details on the workshop shortly.

SUMMARY:HELM ENGAGE #2
DESCRIPTION:HELM ENGAGE asks a simple if unthinkable question: What are the benefits of Covid-19? Without diminishing the terrible cost of the pandemic\, there is no denying that it has changed the world and higher education in substantial ways. The second of the HELM ENGAGE series offers a nuanced perspective of the way Covid-19 has exposed the skeletal inequity that underpins our sector\, but also the ways that it has addressed the chronic obstacles that have long hindered teaching\, learning and research. And\, as important\, how Covid-19 has ushered in a disrupted space for creative practices. HELM ENGAGE #2 takes place on Tuesday\, 31 August 2021 (14:00-16:00) where we will host the second of many dynamic debates. \nCovid-19 and African higher education: The good\, the bad and the ingenious\nWe will discuss the implications of Covid-19 on the higher education sector and Africa. The guest speaker will be Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim. She will be followed by Professor Linda Ronnie on the Covid Academic Research Study and the impact of Covid-19 on women in particular. Finally\, Professor Teboho Moja addresses how Covid-19 has also brought us ingenuity from Africa on how to support higher education in these times\, especially relating to student success. \nRegister Here
