SUMMARY:Foundations of Leadership 1 - For administrative and support staff
DESCRIPTION:The Foundations of Leadership is a two part programme for University Managers in administration divisions who are in senior and middle university positions. These managers come from all sectors including Finance\, HR\, Infrastructure and Maintenance\, ICT\, Academic Administration and Support\, Campus Safety and Security\, Student Affairs\, International Office\, Communications\, Marketing and Public Relations\, Faculty Administration\, Sport and Residence Life\, and so on. Your will be registering for Foundations of Leadership 1. Once completed\, these managers may proceed to Part 2 (please note that there is a different Foundations of Leadership for academic managers).\nThe purpose of the programme is to imbue university managers in administration divisions with a deeper understanding of the overall policy\, strategy\, transformation\, people management and institutional challenges of the higher education sector. This will facilitate more cohesive systems of academic and operations management within our universities\, based on a shared understanding of key challenges\, as well as developing tools for problem solving\, leading and managing. See programme outline below. \nThe objectives of Foundations of Leadership for University Managers are as follows: \n\nDevelop an informed perspective on the challenges facing university management in a complex and changing higher education environment.\nPromote the development of creative problem solving through expert input\, self-reflection\, case studies and group interaction.\nIntroduce skills that should contribute to proactive and effective management leadership at your University.\nFormally and informally engage with other participants\, through the sharing of experiences and the exchanging of ideas\, in support of both personal and institutional development.\n\nThis programme is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training through the University Capacity Development Grant and is therefore offered free of charge to the public university sector.

DESCRIPTION:Leading Organisational Change\nfor\nSustainability and Development in Higher Education\nNowadays\, uncertainty characterises our world globally. We continue to experience the effects on life\, well-being\, and socio-economic inequalities as well as the mutations of the Covid-19 virus. We do so against the backdrop of compounding global challenges of climate change\, poverty and hunger\, gender inequality\, health and well-being\, clean water\, and sanitation.  \nThe conflicts across the globe including in the Ukraine and Syria highlight our shared vulnerability\, heightened uncertainties and how highly interconnected we are as societies economically\, socially\, and politically. The ways in which the geo-political context is framed\, shapes sustainability development and change. Higher Education is impacted by these changes\, in terms of its core mission\, financial sustainability and economic and social relevance.  \nThis complex\, changing context raise several leaders :  \n\nHow do we locate Higher Education and its leadership to advance sustainability and development?\nHow can Higher Education Leadership enhance its collaborative efforts for national\, global change and stability?\nWhat leadership framework/s can guide our thinking?\nHow can we as Higher Education leaders monitor and evaluate our contributions?\n\nThe following constitute the sub-themes of the Summit: \n\nWhat has changed in the Global and Regional Context that requires a rethinking of Leadership in Higher Education?\nWhat is required in relation to Leadership Development that will allow for complexity thinking\, agile and nimble capacity for change\, innovation and fresh “out of the box” thinking?  \nWhat is the Organisational Setting/s in relation to collaboration\, partnership and innovation required for universities to thrive towards Sustainable Change and Development? \n\nHigher education leaders and experts from across the globe — including the American Council on Education and the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) — are invited to talk through these issues in search of economic development and sustainability and a socially just future for our universities. DESCRIPTION:As you are aware\, the HELM annual programmes are in full swing with exciting workshops\, courses and events currently on offer. \nAs part of our mandate to capacitate and develop the sector\, we are planning an in-person consultative and interactive workshop for Deans. \nBearing this in mind\, we would like to invite you to join us at an in-person Deans workshop in Cape Town. It starts with an informal dinner on Thursday\, 3 November 2022 and then continues with a full day session on Friday\, 4 November 2022. DESCRIPTION:Coaching is an integral component of HELM’s leadership development approach and its bespoke interventions. In this ENGAGE\, we try and make sense of the various forms of supportive exchanges that can your assist leadership journey in higher education. At its most basic\, coaching is a discourse\, a conversation between two people. Ironically\, discourse literally means to ‘run away’ and that perhaps is the point. Coaching in the context of higher education entails discarding the usual ways of being and doing. It is about finding new perspectives\, changing the lens\, enabling new interpretations and emboldening us through different conversations that inspire and invigorate both parties. But equally important\, can eventually lead to a new experience of\, and the re-configuration of the higher education space  and the individual’s role in it.  \nIn this ENGAGE\, we examine the role of coaching\, its impact and relevance\, the difference to mentoring and advising\, and how it has achieved acclaim in accelerating change in higher education.  \nProfessor Denise Zinn\, retired DVC NMU and Programme leader of Women in Leadership at HELM\,  and certified coaches\, Dr Sharon Munyaka and Dr Paddy Pampalis\, both also psychologists\, will discuss the dangers and benefits of coaching and how these can shape higher education leadership in the future. DESCRIPTION:Academic advising: A catalyst for student success\nAcademic advising\, nationally and internationally is recognised as a key high impact practice for student retention and success. Although as a profession and practice it is well established across the globe\, in the US\, UK and Netherlands\, the development of academic advising in South Africa is relatively new. This engagement will provide an overview of the development of the profession and practice of academic advising in South Africa\, by drawing on lessons learnt by seven participating institutions through the National DHET Collaborative Grant led by the University of the Free State. DESCRIPTION:Even before the pandemic\, internationalisation of higher education had become much more than joint degrees and exchanges\, with a knowledge drift of North-South and the thrill of academic tourism. In this Engage we explore critical questions around the role that internationalisation of higher education can and must play: advancing the SDGs\, widening diversity and understanding what aspects of internationalisation have – over this period – grown\, changed or become obsolete. \nRecipient of the Noam Chomsky Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and Distinguished Fellow at the Center for International Higher Education\, Professor Hans de Wit will be exploring the present and future possibilities for internationalisation against the backdrop of the pandemic and geopolitical upheaval. \nThe International Education Association of South Africa (IEASA) will also share some of their advances into developing a cohesive and comprehensive policy for South Africa with a view to sustainable internationalisation. Hans de Wit’s views will be expanded by South African perspectives on the promise and perils of a rebooted internationalisation. SUMMARY:ENGAGE #6 - The higher education state of mind
DESCRIPTION:For a traumatic event\, like Covid-19\, to be assessed and processed\, normally requires that it is over. But as we have been told so often\, there is no clear teleological end point. We need to understand trauma while enduring its continuing presence. And nowhere is this more evident than in the realm of mental health\, both at a student and staff level. \nProfessor Jason Bantjes and Professor Dan Stein have worked on the crucial area of student mental health due to the lingering impact of Covid-19.  The study originated via the WHO World Mental Health Surveys – International College Student (WMH-ICS) Initiative. It was funded  by the SAMRC and took the form of an online survey with over 78\,000 participants which assessed mental health needs\, risk and protective factors\, treatment seeking\, stressors\, GBV\, and other factors pertinent to service delivery. \nDr Keamogetse Morwe at the University of Venda\, based at the Institute for Gender and Youth Studies\, will speak about staff and collective mental health at universities. The second of the HELM ENGAGE series offers a nuanced perspective of the way Covid-19 has exposed the skeletal inequity that underpins our sector\, but also the ways that it has addressed the chronic obstacles that have long hindered teaching\, learning and research. And\, as important\, how Covid-19 has ushered in a disrupted space for creative practices. HELM ENGAGE #2 takes place on Tuesday\, 31 August 2021 (14:00-16:00) where we will host the second of many dynamic debates. \nCovid-19 and African higher education: The good\, the bad and the ingenious\nWe will discuss the implications of Covid-19 on the higher education sector and Africa. The guest speaker will be Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim. She will be followed by Professor Linda Ronnie on the Covid Academic Research Study and the impact of Covid-19 on women in particular. Part 1 of the engagement will examine the immediate impact of this programme\, highlighting the successes and key lessons learnt. DESCRIPTION:Leading and Managing the University in Africa for Disruption\, Complexity and Change. \nThe temptation exists to posit the idea of normality at the end of global disruption\, like the Covid-19 pandemic. A new normal perhaps\, but a recognisable future based on past configurations. The Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) Virtual Summit\, seeks to interrogate this notion and tease out what a post-pandemic world means for the university\, for leadership\, for teaching and learning and the very future of higher education. \nThe HELM Virtual Summit will be driven by four novel assumptions. The first is that virtual engagement necessitates an increased opportunity for dynamic participation and interaction given the context of uncertainty and complexity\, for leadership. For this reason\, the plenary inputs will be brief\, provocative and will encourage further reflective questions and discussion in the break-away sessions. Secondly\, the anticipated financial impact of COVID’s economic stagnation on higher education in South Africa and further afield on the Continent; its future sustainability and how it will force the institutions’ leadership and stakeholders to fundamentally change their thinking and ways of doing business. Thirdly\, the topics discussed will be formulated\, as far as possible\, as questions to stimulate ‘generative conversations’ as new thinking is needed\, in terms of leadership and management in universities.
