Gender inequality within our universities is a pervasive issue permeating higher education across Africa and internationally. Launched by Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM), a flagship leadership programme of Universities South Africa funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Women in Leadership (WiL) programme brings together 26 women leaders in higher education, from heads of departments through to deputy vice-chancellors.

The programme is based on in-depth research on the experiences of women leaders in the South African higher education context and exposes a spectrum ranging from subtle exclusion to blatant sexual harassment. The WiL programme seeks to equip women to address these issues in their leadership experience.
