Academic advising: A catalyst for student success

Academic advising, nationally and internationally is recognised as a key high impact practice for student retention and success. Although as a profession and practice it is well established across the globe, in the US, UK and Netherlands, the development of academic advising in South Africa is relatively new. This engagement will provide an overview of the development of the profession and practice of academic advising in South Africa, by drawing on lessons learnt by seven participating institutions through the National DHET Collaborative Grant led by the University of the Free State. The speakers will share strategies that demonstrate how academic advising can catalyse student success, enhance the effective use of student support services and improve institutional effectiveness.

Professor Francois Strydom, Senior Director: Centre for Teaching and Learning and Ms Gugu Tiroyabone, Assistant Director: Academic Advising from the University of the Free State will take you through this emerging field of study and practice on Monday, 22 August 2022 (14:00—15:30).

Once you have registered you can immediately add the event to your calendar (with all the Zoom details) or you will receive an email with the Zoom details for the engagement. Please feel free to pass this invitation on to your other colleagues who may be interested in attending.
