University Deans Programme (UDP) 2023

Background, aim and objectives

The Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) programme, offered since 2002, focuses on identifying and responding to the leadership and management development needs in South African universities. HELM’s mission is to explore and create relevant and cutting-edge solutions that address organisational and individual capacity needs in universities. HELM is a strategic partnership between Universities South Africa (USAf) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

The University Deans Programme (UDP) has been designed as a tailored and context specific series of leadership and professional development initiatives, which assists in addressing their leadership and management needs. The concept note and plan for 2023 can be downloaded here. The objectives and design principles for the Deans Programme are set out below.

The overall objectives of this UDP workshop are to:

  1. To provide an enabling and supportive space to engage with some of the global and local trends which currently shape higher education and will be operating over the next decade.
  2. To consider the implications of a changing, ever more complex world for Deanship in the South African higher education context.
  3. To consider and engage on the day-to-day experiences of Deans and how to create the conditions for managing change and collective problem solving.
  4. To establish a network of Deans who can co-create a learning community which will have a lasting influence on the local HE sector.

There is no enrolment fee for the UDP as it is being funded by the DHET University Capacity Development Grant and offered as a public service to all universities. There are only 40 spaces available at this workshop, and these will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Travel and accommodation are for the university’s account. Details on the venue will be communicated shortly.
